Columbus, OH

P1030817

For the longest time Columbus has been considered a typical American city and its local population has been viewed as a mirror image of the U.S. population as a whole. For this reason the city is often used as a testing ground for corporate America’s latest products and services.

Large chain retailers and brands such as Abercrombie and Fitch and The Limited (parent company of Victoria’s Secret) are headquartered in Columbus. Similarly, large insurance companies are firmly based there as well.

Despite such facts, Columbus doesn’t lack personality and is not afraid of supporting independent initiatives. And with the largest university campus in the United States, Ohio State University is a strong local asset that grows and graduates inspired young minds and plays a role in spreading fresh ideas into the city’s diverse communities.

During our short stay, we had the opportunity to walk High Street of Short North, an area recently praised in the New York Times. Highlights include Jeni’s Ice Cream offering handmade confections made with locally sourced ingredients, the spacious and luminous Northstar Cafe, and Tigertree, a select store with unique design pieces from the area and beyond. The noteworthy North Market (the only market in Columbus and also small business incubator) was unfortunately closed during our visit.

Omaha, NE

IMG_6793

Some locals in Omaha think that their city is of one of America’s best kept secrets and want to keep it that way. Others wish that more people stopped in Omaha (instead of just flying over it) because there is more to the city than Mutual of Omaha, Omaha Steaks and Warren Buffett: Omaha is also a creative incubator and the Silicon Prairie of the region.

MIX_36OM6

Omaha is a small city made of contrasted districts in the downtown area. The real surprise for us was to discover the Old Market District after a long drive from Colorado. The Old Market is authentic and delivers an old Western charm that can no longer be found in a majority of American cities.

Omaha seeks to bring its population back on the streets and revive the city center. Inspired dining venues such as M’s Pub or The Boiler Room are local favorites in the area and prove that restaurants that blend design with fine food are an integral part of a city’s appeal. A number of affordable urban living developments surrounding the market are attractive alternatives to suburban neighborhoods.

IMG_6772

The world renowned Bemis artist-in-residence center (pictured above), set up by Ree Kaneko in the early eighties has had considerable influence on the creative character of Omaha and helps to diversify the local population (we spotted a couple of young Japanese artists struggling to order steaks at M’s Pub). The recently opened Kaneko Center is another initiative that explores new creative possibilities for Omaha (see our blog post and video), and we heard that a new design school may also be seeing the light of day in a few years time.

Portland, OR

IMG_5307

Portland is a city that is not afraid of being different and which could serve as a model for other American cities. Its unique identity and lifestyle were shaped by local creative minds that care about sustaining a decent quality of life: through good coffee and food, green transit systems, and independent retail stores.

IMG_5319

On Stark Street (pictured above), the Ace Hotel serves as headquarters for curious travelers and as workspace for local residents in search of inspiration and a wireless internet connection. The hotel building also houses Stumptown Coffee, that diffuses a wonderful aroma throughout the lobby and  where each single cup of coffee is made to perfection, and Clyde Common, a restaurant serving foreign and domestic cuisine cooked with local ingredients.

Cycling is fully integrated in Portland’s culture and way of life: from the urban infrastructure to organizations like Bike Portland, retail spaces such as Veloshop, “public art” made of children’s bicycles. street furniture, or custom frame builders like Sasha White from Vanilla Bicycles.

Phoenix, AZ

img_4567

Phoenix during the summer months can be summarized in one word: heat. Not being able to walk down the streets of downtown was unfortunate as we would have liked to take a closer look at the stunning local architecture.

img_4598

Sleek buildings over a background of dry and sandy desert mountains is a combination that makes Phoenix a rather unique city.

mix_36p0

Some of the architectural highlights from Phoenix are the Museum of Art, the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, the Clarendon Hotel, the Valley Ho and Marlen Grove.

img_4595

The Valley Ho is a mid-century modern hotel located in neighboring Scottsdale. The building has recently been re-opened to the public and offers an eclectic mix of modern and contemporary designs.

Greg Esser from Made boutique is one of the individuals behind the Roosevelt Row initiative: a dynamic, walkable mixed-use cultural district connecting historic neighborhoods with the urban core of downtown Phoenix.

Santa Fe, NM

img_4364Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a place defined by art, craft and architecture and where the boundaries between creative practices are blurred. The city attracts tourists and creatives from around the United States and the world.

mix_3671

Many details in Santa Fe, from signs to storefront and menus (pictured above) are a reflection of the city’s interest in the past and things that are handmade.

img_4307

American Indian art is an underlying theme and a strong creative influence in Santa Fe. The Institute of American Indian Art is a one-of-a-kind museum and college of fine arts dedicated to the study of indigenous cultures and art.

mix_3672

New Mexico Creates at the recently opened New Mexico History Museum is a different kind of museum store that sells handcrafted jewelry, Native American art work, Hispanic crafts, art glass, and textiles all created by New Mexico artists and artisans. One of their approaches is to showcase products that integrate contemporary design in traditional craftsmaking techniques.

img_4390

Further from the city center, Railyard Santa Fe is a neighborhood that is being regenerated. It represents the possibility of a more contemporary Santa Fe.

Austin, TX

img_4038

Roadside Relics (pictured above) is a gallery/studio that captures Austin’s quirky nature. Austin is the capital of Texas, but it is also a city that defies all cliches associated to its home state. Austin embraces the old, the new and the unexpected.

mix_3665

Signs are part of the visual landscape of Austin and many of the designs encapsulate the city’s love for American graphic traditions.

San Jose Hotel owned by Liz Lambert is a reconverted motel on South Congress Avenue that has become a local creative community magnet and is a promoter of good design. The presence of San Jose has helped transform South Congress Avenue into a vibrant and contemporary neighborhood (pictured below).

We want to enable them to design their future so they feel invested in it. This is a problem throughout our country and we hope we can make a difference and provide a model for other communities to explore with their youth.” –Mark Bethel
